Co-curricular Information
Experience and Achievement
The honors program committee wants to get to know you through the activities you’ve been involved with. While we’re interested mainly in the last 3.5 years, we invite you to tell us about significant or formative experiences that pre-date that time, as well. For example, if you lived outside the United States until you were eight years old, list it under “Global or cross-cultural concerns”! If you were an altar boy or girl at your local parish for several years, consider listing that under “Sustained service or community action.” Many of the items you list will be academic or school-sponsored, but some of them won’t be. Tell us everything you think is important about you!
Don’t feel pressure to list something in every category: it’s expected that some of these categories will be “empty.” By the same token, a single experience may be listed under more than one category. “President of the German Club,” for example, should be listed under both “Global or cross-cultural concerns” and “leadership roles or responsibilities.”
Academic awards or recognition.
For example: “National Honors Society,” “Rotary Award for Outstanding High School Business Student,” “State Champion, Math Bowl,” etc.
Arts and performance activities.
For example: “All-state Choir,” “Indie hip-hop performer,” “Christian Mime Outreach,” etc.
Employment and other work, whether paid or unpaid.
For example: “Junior teller at Rockridge Credit Union,” “Summer camp counselor,” “Principal caregiver for two younger siblings,” etc.
Global or cross-cultural concerns.
For example: “President of the German Club,” “Model United Nations,” “Summer spent caring for elderly grandmother in El Salvador,” etc.
Leadership roles or responsibilities.
For example: “President of the German Club,” “Student Council Vice President,” “Captain, Varsity Football Team,” etc.
Sports and athletics participation.
For example: “Varsity Volleyball,” “Curling team,” “High school cheerleading squad,” etc.
Sustained service or community action.
For example: “Adopt-a-Highway with Girl Scouts of America,” “Volunteer with St. Benedict’s Shelter for the Homeless,” “Students for Food Security,” etc.
Any special achievements or accolades not listed in the above?
Essay Responses
Was there a time…?
In 300-500 words, respond to one of the following three prompts:
Have you ever come upon a question or problem in class that motivated you to learn more on your own? How did you pursue it? To what kind of knowledge or perspective did it lead you?
Have you ever encountered a work of art, play, painting, symphony, or similar-that "spoke" to you? What was it about the work that inspired you to think or feel differently? How might you replicate that effect in your own life?
Have you ever changed a deeply held belief, one which you were very confident in and perhaps even advocated for? What sorts of considerations led you to change it? How did the change impact your everyday experience?
Looking to the future
To this point, we’ve asked you to tell us about the person you are and the things you have done. In 100 words or fewer, answer the following two questions about the things you will do and the person you’ll become.
1. What do you think the St. Norbert College Honors Program would mean to your college experience? In other words, in your view, what do you hope to gain by participating in the Program?
2. Where do you see yourself upon graduation from SNC? Who are you? What have you done? Where are you headed?
